How to Comment on LinkedIn

Why Comment? It brings visibility

  • Comments generate ~50% more views than “Likes” and up to 80% more views than sharing posts. Replying to the comments of others can increase engagement by up to 200%.
  • Comments help the author of the post (your clients, colleagues…)
  • Stop only re-sharing! Commenting also shares the post with your network.

How to comment

  1. Scroll through your feed (or visit someone’s profile).
  2. Find a post from someone in your industry (or a client). Refrain from commenting if you do not have anything to add to the conversation. For example, commenting on something small/generic like "great post" won't open up any opportunity for conversation.
  3. Leave a thoughtful comment on that post.

What else?

  • You can bring other people into the discussion with a @mention (but use this wisely).
  • @mention the author of the post in your comment.
  • You can use hashtags and emojis.

Notice the limited use of the '@mention' as well as the acknowledgment of current and past achievements.

What is a thoughtful comment?

Often, you can rely on the first thing that comes to your mind when you are reading somebody’s post. You could use this to:

  • Compliment on something somebody has achieved, and say why/what you like about it.
  • Ask a question
  • Share your opinion/view/insights (but do not sidetrack the debate)
  • Craft your comment like a mini-post. Acknowledge the original content to give your followers context, and then add your insight and expand the conversation.
    • Make sure to keep comments concise--long-winded comments can be overwhelming and may deter others from engaging in the conversation.
  • Avoid directly pitching or selling your services in this manner. Instead, bring genuine insight and make a significant contribution. Look for posts on topics you enjoy, and show your enthusiasm through your comments.
    • However, do keep your posts professional. Avoid any language or content that could be considered offensive, inappropriate, or unprofessional.
  • If you don't know where to start, try a greeting! Greetings contain a welcoming tone and show that you are engaging in a conversation.

What else?

  • It’s okay to disagree but stay polite and within the common LinkedIn etiquette. Please avoid personal attacks, and criticism, focus on the topic at hand, and avoid making assumptions about the person or their motives.

More Tips:

  • Comment within reason.
    • Put a healthy limit on how much commenting you do.
  • Comment on comments as well as the post itself.
    • Commenting on comments keeps the conversation going--respond to another comment or ask a commenter a question.
  • Please proofread your comment before you post it. Ensuring there are no typos, grammatical errors, or other mistakes can help you come across as more professional and polished.

ENGAGEMENTS: LIKES & COMMENTS

  • Self-comment on your posts for growth: Another way to start a conversation.
  • Hours for self-commenting: within the first hour of publishing, between 6-8 hours, and after 24 hours. These specific intervals can lead to an increase in total reach, sometimes by as much as 25%.
  • Be careful with self-comments containing links
  • Aim to reply to all comments received within the first hour of posting. This can lead to a 40% increase in post-growth.
  • Consistently posting 10 quality comments daily for a month can lead to a significant increase in profile views (40%), engagement on one's content (25%), and follower/connection growth (20%).
